The Sciences Transformation Project located within the Banks Precinct of the Australian National University, will provide world class accommodation for the ongoing scientific endeavour of major chemistry and biological sciences teaching and research within the University. It will cater for research-led undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, increasing the number of work-ready Science graduates with strong practical laboratory skills. The facilities will be accessible to students from across the tertiary and secondary sectors.
ANU is demonstrating its commitment to a research-intensive education model by structural change. Chemistry teaching and research, separated in the past by tradition and physical facilities, are now brought together within the University. The merger of the Research School of Chemistry and the Department of Chemistry was approved by Council in February 2009. This follows a similar move creating the School of Biology from research and teaching biological science departments in 2008. Students are inspired by being part of a research-intensive curiosity-driven environment, and the opportunity for ‘hands-on’ experience, whilst researchers mentor the next generation of thinkers, and indeed, are challenged by students unafraid to ask questions.
